English for Telephoning
R. Chapman
Oxford University press 2007
ISBN 978-0-19-457912-4This book is designed for students at preintermediate and intermediate level. It is separated into 6 chapters, with each chapter covering language topics most commonly needed when using the telephone in English. There are lots of different activities such as pair work, reading comprehensions, listening activities. There is a fair bit of writing involved. I had expected the course to be more oral based as it is Telephone English but there was an emphasis on understanding the strategies behind the language used. There are on average 12 activities per unit and only 2 or 3 of them are oral based.
I particularly liked the language tips and strategies included in every unit and there are some good role plays. In general I think this is a good book to use to supplement a course book or it could perhaps be used simultaneously with the Email book in the series.
A CD of the listening activities is included and written transcripts are in the back. There is also a full answer key.
There is an excellent phrases and vocabulary list in the book which is an excellent reference guide.
